Follow Me

“He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’”

Follow me.  Jesus’ call never changes.  It never gets old or runs dry.  It never shifts or strays.  His call from the first day to the last is always the same: follow me.

When Jesus called Peter the first time He said, “Follow me.”  It is the same for us.  From the very first day, Jesus says, “Follow me.”  And in today’s Gospel, after Peter’s reconciliation, Jesus shows us that His call remains the same - even if we mess up.

[Jesus] said to [Peter], “Follow Me.”

No matter what we do or don’t do, no matter where we go or don’t go, and no matter why we say yes or no to Jesus - His call remains the same.  It is steady and sure.  It’s founded in love and strengthened by His ability to see the best in us. “Follow Me.”

Jesus doesn’t call us to follow Him because we’re perfect.  He calls us because we’re broken.  He calls us to follow Him so that we can learn a new way.  Like Peter, we’ll fail Him - but like Peter, He asks us time and time again to follow Him.  Despite our littleness, Jesus invites us to follow Him so that we can watch Him work and learn to love like He does.

Father,

Thank You for Your consistent invitations to follow You.  Thank You for never giving up on us.

Teach us how to watch and to learn from You.  Teach us how to love like You do.  Give us Your eyes.  Keep our eyes trained on You.

God, we love You.  Teach us a new way to love.  Amen.
