On the Rock
“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”
The first reading tells us that “the LORD is an eternal Rock.” When we build our lives on Him, we are like wise men. When we set our lives upon the foundation of His love, we are safe. During the holiday season, it can be hard to remember where to put our priorities.
The holidays often come with expectations from the ones we love. Whether intentional or not, they’re often rife with difficult decisions - sprinkled with guilt trips and disappointments. Despite the best intentions of our loved ones, we’re often pushed and pulled in different directions. But when we set our lives according to the wills and wishes of others (including the ones we love), it’s like setting a house on sand. We have to take refuge first in the Lord, so we don’t build on shaky ground because…
We’re meant to build our lives around Jesus.
So - this Advent, structure your life around Him. Set your foundation on the Rock, on the Christ, on Jesus. Let Him govern your time and your plans. Put Him first this Advent. Put Him first as you’re planning your Christmas visits. Put Him first as you select your gifts. Put Him first at Your office Christmas party. Put Him first, and set your life on the Rock.
Father,
Thank You for providing a steady foundation. Thank You for being a rock for us.
Please help us to build our lives around You. We love You, Father. Help us to build lives that reflect the joy of that love. Amen.
