Your Sycamore Tree
“So he (Zacchaeus) ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus,”
What is your sycamore tree? What do you need to build into your life in order to see Jesus more clearly? Maybe you need routine, maybe you need a devotional, or maybe you just need a spot.
As many of you know, I have a prayer chair, and every morning, I have to get my butt in my chair. If I don’t, my day does not go as well. If I don’t welcome Jesus into my life first thing, it’s always a little bit rougher.
My prayer chair is a lot like Zacchaeus’s sycamore tree.
My prayer chair helps me to see Jesus because I know just where to go when I need to find Him. I have a plan, and I know a place that I can go to meet Jesus every day. Sisters, I have to have a prayer chair because I need routine. I need a specific time and place to encounter the Lord.
Like Zacchaeus, I need a plan. If I don’t make a plan, it doesn’t happen. When my alarm goes off at 6:30, that’s not a moment to make decisions - that’s a moment to assert some will power and follow the plan.
I’d be willing to bet that most of us need a plan.
Like Zaccheaus, we need a plan to take advantage of the things that help us to see Jesus better - of the sycamore trees in our lives. Whether that’s choosing a prayer chair or going to bed earlier or making time for events in your church and diocese - we need a plan to spend time with the One who loves us.
Sisters, what sycamore trees are you climbing so you can see Jesus better? What sycamore trees are you planning so you can find the One who just wants to love you? What is your sycamore tree?
Father,
Thank You so much for Zaccheaus. Thank You for the witness of his life, and for the example that he set for us. Father, thank You for helping us to build in rhythms of life. Thank You for prayer chairs. Thank You for all the little things that help to demonstrate Your love for us.
Father, help us. Help us to grow. Give us courage to climb our sycamore trees.
Father, we want You in our lives. Help us to choose to plan for You.
We love You, Father. Help us to live for You. Amen.
