Salty

“You are the salt of the earth.”

Today’s Gospel reminds us that we have a role to play.  Our lives aren’t meaningless, and they’re not only for our own enjoyment.  As Christians, we have an obligation to be the salt of the earth.

Butttt - if you’re anything like me, you get salty about being salt.  I get annoyed that I can’t just live for myself.  I get fussy when the Lord doesn’t give me the things that I want.  I get salty with Jesus when He asks me to be the salt because, most of the time, it’s not very comfortable.

Being salt is about refining.

When you eat a steak without salt, it’s just not as good because salt brings out the best in that steak.  And as with salt and steak, we’re meant to bring out the best in one another.  Even if that isn’t easy.  Even if it means we have to set our wants and needs aside.  We have the privilege of calling each other to be our very best.

Being the salt of the earth isn’t always easy because it means standing for what God says.  It means highlighting the truth and calling out lies.  Sometimes it means giving up comfort and often it means surrendering popularity.  Being salt is like being a warrior set on fighting for the best in everything - in friendships, in character, in government, and in our churches.  Even though it’s hard to give ourselves away to this mission, we have the privilege of working to make this world the best that it can be.

Father,

Thank You for inviting us to be a part of Your big plans.  Thank You for pushing us to be the best that we can be while simultaneously choosing us despite the times that we fail.

Teach us how to be salt.  Teach us how to call each other on and speak the truth with love.  Teach us how to work together so that we can help each other to be the best we can be.

God, we love You.  Help us to be generous with our lives so that we can be salt to the earth.  Amen.
