Little Miracles
“Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.”
A few years ago, I was shopping for a new-to-me car. I was determined to find a car and get a loan all on my own. It was overwhelming, but I was determined. And then my dad called me. He’d found an ideal little car, bought it, and offered me an interest-free loan.
At first, I was upset. Buying my first car felt like a right-of-passage into adulthood. I wanted to do this on my own; I wanted it to be my decision. But the more I thought about it, the more grateful I became. I wanted to handle everything on my own, but my dad knew better. He knew that I needed help, and he wanted to take care of me. God, our Father, is the same.
The Father wants to take care of us.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers the crowds “as much of the fish as they wanted.” Jesus takes scarcity and brings abundance. Just like my dad did, God showed His love by providing more than anyone expected. God loves to offer more than we anticipate - especially when we don’t think we need help.
Often, I forget that God works these little miracles all the time. I forget that He’s always moving and always bringing life. I forget that He’s planning for my good and ready to meet my needs. Sisters, He’s always exceeding our expectations and working small miracles. And as our faith grows in small miracles, we’ll start to see bigger ones.
Father,
Thank You for all the little miracles that You’re working. Thank You for looking at the scarce areas of our lives and of our hearts and providing abundantly.
God, teach us how to believe in Your abundance. Teach us to have faith for surprises and miracles in everyday life. Teach us how to accept Your gifts with joy.
God, we love You. Help us to look for the little miracles You’re working. Amen.
