Miracle Maker

“Cast the net over the right side of the boat, and you will find something.”

Jesus promises the disciples that they’ll “find something” when they cast their nets.  I imagine that they assumed they’d find fish, but instead they found their Lord. Instead, Jesus harkens back to one of His first miracles, as if to say, “Remember how far we’ve come?”

The first time there was a miraculous catch of fish, Peter was focused on the fish - on the miracle.  But the second time, Peter could care less about the catch. As soon as John says, “It is the Lord,” Peter leaps from the boat and runs to the shore.  He’s not focused on the miracle; He’s focused on the One who made it.

Peter fixes His eyes on the Miracle Maker first.

Sisters, I feel a real kinship with Peter right now - when He didn’t know what else to do, He went fishing.  He went back to what was comfortable, back to something He could understand - and I find myself wanting to do the same, to go back to all my old comforts.  But when Jesus showed up, Peter abandoned His old comforts.

Peter shed his old life for Christ, and I want to shed mine.  I want to run towards Jesus with little regard for what I’m giving up.  To be honest, I often glance back at what I’m leaving behind as I jog towards Jesus.  But I want to be like Peter; I want to run with abandon towards the Savior, to pursue Him before all else.  I want my focus to be on the Miracle Maker. Like Peter, I want to fix my eyes on the Miracle Maker, abandoning all else.

Father,

Thank You for reminding us of all the miracles You’ve already worked in our lives.  Thank You for showing us the depth of Your love by going straight into the depths of Hell - and rising.  Thank You for being patient with us as we stumble along in our walk towards You.

Father, help us.  Help us to keep our eyes fixed on You.  Help us to focus on YOU more than miracles You can do.  Remind us how far we’ve come since that very first “yes” to following You.

God, we love You.  Help us to fix our eyes on You and run to You with reckless abandon. Amen.
