Communion

“If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me.”

I’m in awe of Jesus’s humility in this gospel.  “If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me.”  It’s all about the Father, and this scripture demonstrates Jesus’s perfect communion with the Father.  Every glory was turned towards God. Every wonder was done in prayer and in communion with the Father.

Jesus was in complete communion with the Father all the time, aligned with His will and serving His mission.  But Jesus didn’t just submit to the Father’s will out of obligation - it was deeper. Jesus was in perfect communion with the way in which the Father viewed the world, and so He was in perfect communion with the way His Father viewed Him.

Jesus’s perfect submission led to perfect communion.

Because Jesus was totally submitted to God, He could see the truth about Himself clearly.  Jesus didn’t need anyone else to tell Him who He was because He knew the Father’s heart. Sisters, being in communion with God isn’t just about taking orders or following the rules or doing what you should.  It’s about communion. Communion wins every time.

Sisters, it always comes back to communion because it’s in communion that we’re free to submit to the Father.  And when we’re free to submit to the Father, we’re free to receive the truth from Him about who we are. If we will have the courage to submit ourselves completely to the Father, He will tell us what we’re worth, and we will find our greatest joy in who He is and who He’s made us to be.

Father,

Thank You.  Thank You for giving us a Savior to emulate and to learn from.  Thank You for sending Jesus to show us that our faith is so much more than mere duty, but about love and communion and intimacy.

God, teach us to let go of everything but You.  Show us how to love You and learn from You and submit to You.  Guide us into deeper relationship with You and show us how to know You the way that Jesus knows You.

God, we love You.  Open our hearts to perfect submission so we can know the joy of perfect communion.  Amen.
