Only One Thing

Girl overlooking water during sunrise

Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing.

Only one thing - Jesus.  God’s presence. We have need of only one thing: Him.  Our world is messy and broken and hard, and Jesus tells us, ‘there is need of only one thing.’  He gives us the antidote for our fears and our worries, for our anxiety and our stress - Himself.

How often do I rely on my own strength?  How often do I rely on my own logic, on my own understanding?  How often do I allow my circumstances to make me anxious or worried?  Too often. And Jesus makes it so simple.

We just need Him.

He makes the foggy clear.  He makes the blind see. He heals the sick and works miracles.  His law is love. And He lived by it and lives by it. We just need Him.  We just need His love and His presence.

When we get worried or anxious, this is our scripture.  I can just hear Him - gently, firmly, and compassionately telling Martha, “There is need of only one thing.”  She doesn’t need to serve food, she just needs to be with Him. It’s that simple.

Just be with Him.

That’s what He wants most of all.  He wants communion. He wants unity.  He wants to provide for your every need.  He wants you to receive all the good things He has in store for you.  But He can’t offer you the better part if you’re not close enough to receive it.

He wants to be close - that’s what it always comes down to.  He wants to be near you and close to your heart. He wants to love you with the best love - a lasting, supernatural, unfailing, never-ending, unconditional love.  So stick close to Him today, Sisters. Stay close, sit at His feet, take courage, and receive the better part.

Father,

Thank You for inviting us to sit at Your feet. Thank You for being such a good teacher, such a good friend. Thank You for seeing and acknowledging our fears and worries and anxieties. And thank You for being bigger than them.

Father, we choose You. We choose Your victory and Your love. We choose Your Gospel and Your presence over our need to have answers.

Jesus, we need You more than we need answers. We need You more than we need to understand what You’re doing. Help us to wait on Your word.

Abba - we trust You. We love You. Help us to live at Your feet.
