God's Work

“I glorified You on earth by accomplishing the work that You gave me to do.”

During this quarantine, I’ve gotten pretty fed up with the mundane.  I’m definitely over the same-old, same-old.  But when we encounter moments when it’s annoying to do the “stuff of life,” we’re invited to press into God’s work instead of our own.

Let’s be honest, it’s pretty arrogant of us to decide what’s important and what’s unimportant to God.  Deep cleaning the bathroom might seem to be an unimportant task, but if my roommate gets a stomach bug in the middle of the night, I’ll bet that task would seem important and that she’d be really grateful for a clean bathroom.

We glorify God by saying yes.

The point is - we glorify God by doing what He asks us to do - even if it doesn’t look glamorous or fun, even if our tasks might seem mundane, and even if we don’t understand why they need to be done.  When God gives us work to do, and we give Him glory by giving ourselves to it.  Colossians 3:23-24 says,

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as if working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

What if we approached every task as if we were serving the Lord?  From mowing the lawn and doing the dishes to shaving our legs and cleaning out the refrigerator - what if we performed every act as if we were serving God?  Sisters, I believe that we’re meant to find joy in the mundane tasks set before us not because they’re fun - but because we know that God is glorified when we accomplish His work.

Father,

Thank You for humbling us.  Thank You for allowing us mundane moments to choose Your will over our preferences.

Teach us how to joyfully seek Your tasks, Lord - no matter how small. Teach us how to follow You - no matter where You lead.

God, we love You.  Teach us how to do Your work with a joyful heart.  Amen.
