Winning
“The community of believers was of one heart and mind,”
Have your legs ever felt like noodles after a tough workout? Yeah. That’s how my will-power feels after a month of sheltering in place. Without any built-in structure to my day, I’ve had to use a ton of self-discipline - and when is that ever fun?
This is especially true in the area of social media. It’s too simple to open Facebook or Instagram on my phone when I’m feeling bored or lonely. And while I love social media, feelings of comparison inevitably arise. I see families - moms who are married with kids, and I feel sad. I see ministry role models who are capitalizing on this quarantine, and I feel like a failure. I see friends with their sexy jobs who got stuck on a beach in Mexico, and I’m super envious.
Comparison is the thief of JOY.
Theodore Roosevelt
Mr. Roosevelt was a very wise man. When my social media activity tips from fun to painful, it’s time to shut it off. Today’s scripture reminds me that I don’t need to compare or compete because we are a community. We have one heart and one mind and one mission. If my friends are called to evangelize through their children or in grand ways through their ministries, that’s a beautiful gift.
I don’t need to compare or compete with my sisters because we’re on the same team. When another’s life is blessed, it’s a gift to me - it makes my job a little easier. My sisters can be in Mexico winning hearts for Christ, and I can win in my corner of the world. It’s so much better to recognize the gift that we have in each other and celebrate each other’s wins, so this week, I’m making it a priority to celebrate the good in my friends’ lives - because “winning” means loving ourselves and each other and that’s what community is all about.
Father,
Thank You for the gift of community. Thank You for the gifts that You offer to others to bring glory to Your kingdom. Thank You for the opportunities You offer us to be humble and to celebrate others.
God, teach us to be humble. Show us how we can celebrate with others and embrace their wins. Teach us how to hold each other up.
God, we love You. Teach us how to love like You do. Amen.
